Surroundings

We live in North East Florida. Far away enough from the hussle of Central and South Florida to not be directly impacted, but still accessible easily by car. Our little town of Orange Park consists of three square miles. We are bordered by the St. Johns River and Doctors Lake, a lake local Indians shaman used to visit due to it's healing abilities. There are walking paths along the river and several ways nearby to access Drs. Lake and Black Creek as well.
It is three hours from my door to the parking lot of the Magic Kingdom and all Orlando has to offer. National, state and county parks also surround us. The Ocala and the Osceloa National Forests are to the west and south west. The Okefenokee is to the north. Closer to the house there are Jennings state park and Camp Chowenwaw. Between 1.5 and 2 hours away are many great springs and canoe runs. DeLeon State Park is a family favorite of ours.
Historical cities are also close by. The first city of the US is St. Augustine which is 40 minutes away. There is not only fascinating history but great restaurants, shopping and beaches there. Jacksonville, Atlantic and Neptune beaches are also about 40-45 minutes away. Historical, and very charming, Savannah, GA is 2.5 hours to the north. Charleston, SC is a straight 5 hour drive up I 95.
Cumberland Island and Jekyll Island are two lovely resort beaches close by. Both are steeped in history as well.
Jacksonville is our main city. It has a lively cultural scene with the Jacksonville Orchestra performing a wide variety of music. The Performance Arts series is always presenting wonderful plays and concerts as well. We have several great art museums. Our two favorites are MOCHA, the local modern art museum and the Cummer museum which is a more traditional art museum. Every Saturday is the Jacksonville Arts and Food Market where you can buy lovely art, wonderful prepared food and fresh local produce as well.
