Surroundings
You can stroll along the main highways but, better still, the narrow byways of Medieval and Renaissance Rome, where it will be sufficient to look around you to relive the atmosphere of the city between little shops and markets. Voices which resound from house to house, as in the days of Raphael and Michelangelo. Tradition has it that it was right in Trastevere the young girl of modest family (being a baker’s daughter, she was apparently nicknamed Fornarina, “Little Oven Girlâ€) lived and became Raphael’s model for the splendid portrait of the “Fornarina†(see), and for other works of the artist. Following his sudden and early death, romantic legend has it that the grieving girl retired voluntarily to the nearby convent of Saint Apollonia. Rome is full of stories of both humble and powerful people who have walked the same streets as you will.
If you feel like greener surroundings, purer air, and wider horizons, you can walk uphill to the Gianicolo, whose park is dedicated to the memory of the many heroes of the Italian Risorgimento, who fought alongside Garibaldi and often died for the freedom and unity of the nation. From the wide, open square of the Gianicolo, a popular promenade spot for the Romans, Garibaldi looks down from his bronze horse upon the Eternal City which spreads out gently at his feet, and seems to be thoughtfully wondering what destiny awaits it… A little way away, a smaller, but fine, equestrian monument is dedicated to Anita, Garibaldi’s South American companion who followed him in all his adventures, until her premature death.
