Surroundings
Enclavado en la Sierra de la Demanda, próximo al pico Mencilla, el casco urbano de San Millán de Lara está dividido en dos zonas; en la parte alta del pueblo destacan las casas con la construcción típica serrana, la plaza del pueblo y el rollo jurisdiccional . La arquitectura de la comarca basada en el empleo de la piedra y la madera, muestra aquí excelentes ejemplos. Muchas casas de dos plantas se adornan con la célebre chimenea cónica.<br />
En el barrio alto se divisa perfectamente la iglesia y una amplía tierra de campos que en su día fue del señorio del monasterio y que en la actualidad constituyen fincas particulares dedicadas a la agricultura.<br />
Dentro del pueblo, antaño ligado a la cercana ciudad de Lara, pueden apreciarse varias inscripciones romanas. Es curioso como la gruta en la que se escondió el santo queda perfectamente adosada a la iglesia del antiguo monasterio de San Millán. La iglesia de construcción románica aunque con posteriores aderezos está dividida en tres naves, planta basilical, tres ábsides, una torre pegada al muro norte y dos portadas. En su interior todavía se conserva un elegante arco mozárabe.
